The possibilities of determining sub-microquantities of ammonium and nitrate in soils were investigated, using Berthelot's reaction after Kjeldahl distillation. The blue color formed by the ammonia-phenol complex in the presence of sodiumnitroprusside (disodiumpentacyanonitrosylferrate) and hypochlorite is sufficiently stable, specific and intense to detect ammonium concentrations as low as 0.005 p.p.m. in the soil extract or digest. Nitrates can be determined as ammonium after reduction and distillation. The color intensity is about nine times greater than that produced by Nessler's reagent.
