The key focus of the Commission’s is on “the increasing short-termism of modern politics and our collective inability to break the gridlock which undermines attempts to address the biggest challenges that will shape our future.” The case for our future is built in three parts: Possible Futures, identifying key “megatrend” drivers of change and how to address resultant challenges; Responsible Futures, on historical drivers of transformative change, noting where impediments to action have been overcome, and learning from where progress has been stalled; and Practical Futures, on five principles for action that advance the interests of future generations and “how we can build a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for all.” While it can be said that our world has experienced such a sustained period of positive change that “now is the best time in history to be alive,” the future is also threatened by growing systemic risks. In many cases, these are the consequences of our own success. Given the scale of challenges—such as plundering the world’s natural capital, growing income inequality, and potentially devastating results from the accidental or deliberate use of new technologies—we need to pay far more attention to the future and adopt a more farsighted attitude.
