Choice of clerk was also observed during slack hours and when clerks of both racial groups were on duty, permitting customers to make a clear distinction by race. The results clearly indicated no significant race effect in choice of clerk (x2= 0.009, p<. 90); in fact, selection choices of both white and black shoppers were remarkably similar, indicating either a move toward equalitarianism (approximately 50/50 selections in both cases) or, perhaps, the utilitarian and impersonal nature of economic transactions. These data indicate that individuals continued to behave differently on a racial basis even in integrated situations, depending on the racial composition of the interaction process; however, customer choice of clerk was not significantly affected by race.
