Sir: Lasers have opened up a frontier in spectrometry because of their great advantages as light sources. They are very useful as analytical tools, but their complexity and ex-pensiveness do not allow their conventional and practical use in a commerical instrument. Recently the semiconductor laser has been highly developed for the use in applications such as transferring information into/out of a video disk. The sem-iconductor laser has good beam coherence and narrow line width like other laser sources, and it is very small and compact. The semiconductor laser with an output power of 5 mW is now commercially available at a price of about $100. It is noted that a. solid-state emitter produced by related technology has similar performance though it has a relatively poorerbeam and spectral qualities but has a larger output power at a lower price. These semiconductor lasers and solid-state emitters can be electronically modulated up to 40 MHz (solid-state emitter) or 200 MHz (semiconductor laser) without losing (sometimes increasing) its average power and can be con-ventionally used for spectrometry. In this study we wish to present their potential analytical advantages for use in de-termination of phosphorus by photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS).
