The Gulf of Naples is exposed to 4 water masses: Coastal Surface Water (CSW), Tyrrhenian Surface Water (TSW), Tyrrhenian Intermediate Water (TIW) and Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW). In winter the water column is homogeneous down to about 150 m, so that the nutrient rich waters of LIW, whose upper limit varies from 200-300 m, do not appreciably contribute to the enrichment of the upper layer. Land runoff is the main source of nutrients to the Gulf waters. As a consequence the Gulf appears divided ecologically into 2 parts: a eutrophied coastal subsystem influenced by land runoff and an open water subsystem which shows Mediterranean oligotrophic characteristics.
