The menace that commercial plasmapheresis represented to public health was denounced by WHO in 1975 [4], but no international or local measures were taken to regulate the functioning of plasmapheresis centres or the traffic in plasma. Plasma constituted the raw material for an expanding and highly profitable plasma fractionation industry in the United States, Western Europe and Japan [3].This is a dual problem: in the first place, paid donors get infected within plasmapheresis centres, contaminating the source plasma for the fractionation industries of developed countries. In the second place, recipients of these products, usually patients in high-income countries such as haemophiliacs in the 1980s, become infected through the end-products of this plasma. The problem also extends locally, as these same paid donors will also sell whole blood that will be used for transfusion within the country, as was the case in Mexico, where women predominantly of childbearing age were infected very efficiently and in a short period.
