Knowledge about the formation and storage of the biogenic amines is surveyed from the discovery of the color reactions of the adrenal medulla by Vulpian 100 years ago to the present. The formation of histamine, 5-oxytryptamine, and the catechol amines (noradrenalin and adrenalin) and their biological inactivation by amine oxidases are described. The results of studies on cytoplasmic granules, particularly the relationship of granules to storage of the biogenic amines, are discussed briefly.
