SummaryThe myelin period was measured on electron micrographs of feline spinal cord white matter fibres and compared with the number of myelin lamellae. The results show that in specimens processed for electron microscopy the myelin period is inversely related to the number of myelin lamellae. This variability of the myelin period resides in the major and minor dense lines. It is suggested that the present findings may represent a morphological correlate to differences in chemical composition of central myelin from different anatomical areas.
