The first edition of this book was published four years ago and reviewed in the Journal 1• This edition is almost exactly the same length and only slightly more expensive but the contents have been considerably changed and rearrangerl. The authors claim that this follows comments by readers and users of t'1e first edition. Three chapters, including one on forecasting, have been deleted, and there are new chapters on the material which has been retained. So there is rather more change between editions than one might expect-this is, effectively, a new book.The book is deliberately slanted towards a non-specialist readership. The preface suggests that it be used for introductory courses and as a means of conveying the scope of OR to• nanagers (which seems to contradict the omission and deletion of some material which would fall within this scope!). In consequence, the emphasis is on simple mathematics, intuition and illustrative examples and case studies.!> lost, but not all, of these come from the public services or the" not-for-profit sector".
