Hypotrich ciliates with several longitudinal cirral rows and lacking transverse cirri are usually assigned to the family Kahliellidae. Longitudinal cirral rows, however, can be produced by different morphogenetic processes. One of these is by generating additional new (''neokinetal'') anlagen and cirral rows which are usually preserved through a variable number of generations before they are resorbed. This process results in longitudinal parental (old) cirral rows in the interphase infraciliature. Neokinetal anlagen develop in at least five different ways, not all of which, however, result in parental (old) cirral rows in interphase. Five types of neokinetal anlagen development are shown by using protargol impregnation in divisional morphogenesis of Deviata abbrevescens nov. gen., nov. spec., Neogeneia hortualis nov. gen., nov. spec., and Kahliella simplex (Horvath) Corliss. These data are used to redefine the Kahliellidae: ''Euhypotrichina with more than one longitudinal cirral row on right side of body. Neokinetal anlagen develop during morphogenesis'' A comparative analysis of ontogenetic data from species with several longitudinal cirral rows shows neokinetal anlagen in nine genera and species, which are thus assigned to the redefined family Kahliellidae. One of these genera shows morphogenetic processes which are typical for the Kahliellidae and Oxytrichidae and thus link both families, indicating that the newly defined Kahliellidae are ancestors of the Oxytrichidae. Kahliella costata (Kahl) is transferred to the genus Neogeneia nov. gen., K. bacilliformis (Gelei) to the genus Deviata nov. gen., and K. franzi (Foissner) to the genus Orthoamphisiella Eigner and Foissner.Neokinetal anlagen development and phylogeny of the nine genera assigned to the Kahliellidae are discussed. The terms ''neokinetal anlage'', ''neokinetal wave'', ''multiple within'' anlage and ''combined cirral row'' are introduced.
