Male Long-Evans rats weighing 200 g were fed a synthetic diet in amounts which did not permit an increase in weight. The amount of diet required per day gradually decreased and by the end of 6 weeks it was only 60%; of the original requirement. The proportion of body fat and the body protein as a proportion of fat-free body weight did not change during 26 weeks on the restricted diet. Body water showed some slight but significant changes. Liver total lipids, cholesterol, and phospholipids were constant during this time. The weights of the heart and kidneys were unaffected by restriction but liver weights showed some changes. It is concluded that the caloric-requirement adaptation is not a result of alterations in gross body composition.
