Modern Self, and Calculative Reason is an expanded version of his three-part Ruth Benedict lecture series delivered in 2017 at Columbia University. The three essays included in this volume deal, as the book’s subtitle suggests, three independent themes on which Asad has worked extensively over the last several decades: the nation-state, the modern self, and calculative reason. A detailed discussion on each of the theme is provided in the third section of this essay.
