the factory’ was replaced by the ‘logic of the barracks’ (pp. 373–74). Bogdanov died in 1928, following a self-administered medical experiment gone awry. The vast corpus of work he left behind provides vital insight into some of the most turbulent decades in Russia’s history, and helps to unpack many of the philosophical debates that fuelled the radical politics of the time. While White’s decision to view his subject in extreme close-up throughout most of his 500 pages makes Red Hamlet, at times, feel quite claustrophobic, as a comprehensive catalogue of Bogdanov’s works the study will be a useful addition to the reading list of both scholars and students of the Russian Revolution.
