Money, in short, has been neglected in the social sciences in part because of a continuing focus in some quarters upon the static and the tangible (the fixed points of production). It has also been neglected because of the failure of many economically minded social scientists to engage with the related agendas of political scientists in a way that has begun to happen in the case of the ’new international political economy’ (Strange, 1988; Murphy and Tooze, 1991). Finally, it has been neglected by the Left because few there ’have perceived the main weakness of a modem global capitalist system to lie, not in the exploitation of labour nor in the oppression of the working class, but in the ability of its leading governments to run a monetary system stable and viable enough to sustain a global production system’ (Strange, 1988, p. 85). Although ’Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the capitalist system was to debauch the currency’ (Keynes, 1972, p. 57), many on the Left have still remained in thrall to a prevailing ’productionism’ (Corbridge and Thrift, 1994: 3).
