In the Eulapathum section of Rumex the following haploid chromosome numbers occur: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 100. The nearly related R. bucephalorus has 8. In the Acetosa section, R. scutatus has 20 diploid, while R. arifolius and R. nivalis have 15 (cf) or 16 (9). Oxyria digyna has 7 haploid. There is no evidence that polyploidy in the Eulapathum section has involved coherence or fragmentation of chromosomes. "Autopolyploidy," due to a multiplication of the same chromosome set, should be distinguished from "allopolyploidy" resulting from a combination of differing sets in hybridization. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: L.
