SummaryMethods were investigated for extending the storage life of unrooted cuttings of Pelargonium × hortorum Bailey at low temperatures. Deterioration was delayed by high humidity storage in polyethylene bags at 4°C, and with low intensity illumination (1–30 µEm−2s−1). The pre-storage application of anti-transpirants (e.g. S600 at 20 or 40%) was detrimental. Placing the cut stems in sucrose solutions for 24 h before storage caused some dehydration, but increased dry matter, and at 2 or 5% such pre-treatments were beneficial to post-storage rooting. Pre-storage foliar applications of silver nitrate (100 ppm) reduced root numbers but not root weight and prevented symptoms of ethylene damage; however, silver thiosulphate applied through the cut stem caused root distortion and reduced root length and number. By combining the beneficial treatments, over 50% rooting was achieved even after nine weeks’ storage.
