The article examines the strategies utilized by periodontal pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans to invade host cells. It notes that the invasion of bacteria into host cells allows pathogens to occupy various niches within the human body resulting to bacterial infection. Studies revealed that species of common bacteria which were previously considered to be extracellular etiological agents shows an ability to enter nonprofessional phagocytic cells.
