Unlike many mycoplasmas that inhabit the respiratory tracts of mammals and have questionable roles as pathogen~,~~, 4l M. pulmonis is known to be highly pathogenic for mice. s9 Recent studies3s in our laboratory have defined the quantitative relationship between intranasal dose of a virulent strain of M. pulmonis and the disease it causes in mice. Inoculation dose was found to be the major determinant of severity duration, and pathologic character of the disease. Pathogen-free (PF) t mice were inoculated intranasally with broth cultures of M. pulmonis in doses ranging from 10’-9 X lo9 colony-forming units (CFU). Clinical illness and deaths occurred only in animals given lo5 or greater CFU. The outward signs of illness were essentially the same as those reported by Lutsky and Organi~ k,~~ except that we observed “chattering” in an occasional animal. Deaths characteristically followed a bimodal distribution as illustrated in FIGURE 1. Histologic examinations revealed that the first and second peaks of death were attributable to pathologic events involving primarily alveoli and bronchi, respectively.
