The Seminar on diabetes in Asia was timely. 1 The ever-burgeoning population of diabetic patients in Asia is likely to create major management issues in these developing economies. Yet the rising prevalence of diabetes is also likely to have an effect on the already rampant communicable diseases, especially tuberculosis. Diabetes is known to increase the risk of acquiring tuberculosis since it can increase conversion of latent infection into active disease. 2 The presence of diabetes can result in a diminished response of tuberculosis to usual therapy, and mortality rates in such patients may be higher. 3 Some studies have noted an increased risk of multidrugresistant tuberculosis in patients with diabetes. 4 Diabetes is also likely to increase the possibility of sputumpositive tuberculosis, thereby increasing infectivity. 5 The epidemic of diabetes in Asia will result in an escalation in the cost of management of tuberculosis in these developing economies. Although the incidence of tuberculosis is stabilising globally, the increasing population of diabetics may hamper achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Asia.
