The extensive use of a reaction previously discovered (the modified Polonovski reaction) led to the synthesis of all the significantly bioactive [antineoplastic] alkaloids of the vinblastine group. The strategy and the various syntheses used, and the preparation of a completely new series of derivatives, the nor-vinblastine series, are described.
