The suspended solid concentration and the distribution coefficient determine the fate of a contaminant in the water column of a lake. HILTON (1985) idenrified four major sediment redistribution processes in lakes: random rediscribution (RR), inrermittent complete mixing (ICM), peripheral wave action (PWA) and sliding and slumping on slopes. These processes have the potential to resuspend sediment back into the water column. The degree of resuspension and hence the suspended solid (SS) concentration can be direcdy influenced by the active redistribucion processes. DouGLAS & RIPPEY (2000) used the wave mixed layer (WML) theory (SMITH & SINCLAIR 1972) to investigate the dominant sediment redistribution process in a large shallow lake. They found that the average of the largest 30% WML values correlated strongly with the sediment resuspension in Lough Neagh. The present scudy uses WML theory, a time series sediment trap, an d a range o f lakes to further test the strength of the WML theory and to investigate models for predicting the suspended solid concentration from the lake area in lakes where RR is the dominant redistribution process.
