There are some questions in science that touch us deeply enough to provoke gut reactions. When this happens, we are likely to have an instinct about the answer, even before we have any relevant knowledge. The two main questions that Morris addresses are of this nature: Are we alone in the universe? and Does evolution have inherent tendencies, which lead towards humanoid intelligence? While science strives to be objective, I believe that as scientists, it is difficult to approach such questions objectively. Let me admit that my gut instinct is that life is abundant and widespread throughout the universe, and that evolution has a strong tendency to lead towards humanoid intelligence. Morris and I agree that evolution has inherent tendencies, but Morris argues that advanced life may be unique to Earth.
