The waveforms were examined of excitatory post synaptic potentials (EPSP''s) produced by activity in single la afferent fibers (miniature EPSP''s) and of the EPSP''s evoked by volleys produced electrically in muscle nerves. The miniature EPSP''s showed a wide variation in waveform. This was attributed to variation in the location of the synapses generating the different EPSP''s in the cell membrane. Some of the group la synapses terminated on dendrites at considerable electrotonic distances from the soma. The electrically evoked EPSP''s were composed of summated miniature synaptic potentials of widely varying shape and hence widely varying dendritic and somatic location. The linearity of summation of electrically evoked EPSP''s also suggested a wide spatial distribution of the active sites of EPSP generation.
