Presents a literature review, in panel discussion form, on the orienting reflex (OR) and the effects of novelty and surprise on event-related potential components, particularly the P300. The review states, but does not resolve, the problem of the relationship between the P300 and the OR. Methodological and theoretical differences between the P300 and autonomic ORs are discussed. A number of issues are outlined whose investigation might result in the integration of research on autonomic ORs and P300.(68 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
