DEAR EDITOR, Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is a rare autoimmune blistering disease targeting the C-terminus of collagen XVII (COL17). 1 Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering disease targeting the noncollagenous (NC) 16A domain of COL17. 2 Although the predominantly involved organs differ between MMP and BP, the histological and immunological findings are similar, except for the antigens and epitopes.Autoantibodies of MMP are detected less frequently in MMP than in BP because of the titre level. 3 Indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) is the most convenient, and performed using normal human skin (NHS) even though MMP mainly involves the mucosa. 4 Therefore, we hypothesize that normal human oral mucosa (NHOM) may increase the sensitivity for detecting autoantibodies of MMP.
