In October of 2010, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights released a report entitled "Encouraging Minority Students to Pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Careers." This article, written by Commissioner Gail Heriot, is her individual statement in that report. In it, she discusses empirical and other data indicating that students who receive preferential treatment in admissions (and whose academic credentials are thus significantly below the norm for that particular institution) are less likely to follow through with an intent to major in STEM than students with identical academic credentials who attend a school where those credentials put them in the broad center of the class.
