It traverses the development of percussion instruments, "lipvoiced" instruments, woodwinds, strings, and nonorchestral instruments such as the piano, organ, free-reed instruments, and electronic developments in sound production. A final chapter is devoted to a discussion of the development of the orchestra and its instrumentation. Each chapter and section traces the early history and origins of the instruments discussed (often stating as fact what might better be left to conjecture) and their development up to the present century (with an acknowledged indebtedness to the studies of Curt Sachs). Three hundred and twenty illustrations illuminate the text but unfortunately, because of poor workmanship on the part of the printer, a considerable number lack the clarity and definition assumed as a matter of course in present day publication. The bibliography is a curious mixture of pertinent and much irrelevant material. The index is adequate.
