The ultrastructure of sporozoites of 5 species of malaria parasites,Plasmodium vivax, P. cynomolgi, P. berghei nigeriensis, P. vinckei chabaudiand P.gallinaceum, was examined with special reference to the occurrence of the micropore. It was present in sporozoites from oöcysts and from mosquito salivary glands of the primate and avian species but was not detected in the two rodent malarias. On rare occasions more than one micropore was seen in single sporozoites from P.cynomolgioöcysts but not in the other species. The diameter and depths of micropores in P.vivaxand P.cynomolgiwere measured and were found to vary considerably; in all cases, however, the structure was, according to the authors, typical of a non-functional organelle. Some supplementary observations on other organelles of the sporozoites, including the mitochondria, rhoptries and subpellicular microtubules, are included. In discussion, the authors consider the possible relationship between apparent absence of micropores from sporozoites of rodent malarias and the poor infectivity of these parasites, absence of the micropore reflecting incomplete morphogenesis of most of the sporozoites. The paper includes 19 electron micrographs.G.
