This is a conventional taxonomic treatment of a pantropical genus (51 spp.) of leguminous vines. Most members are pioneer plants of seacoasts, riverbanks, and forest margins. Four spp. have been cultivated since prehistoric times for food and other purposes. Four new subgenera and 12 new spp. are proposed.
