To provide a theoretical basis to reduce adsorbable organic halogen (AOX) formation, a kinetic model of the second chlorine dioxide bleaching stage (D 1) is presented for elemental chlorine-free (ECF) bleaching of eucalyptus kraft pulp. The AOX kinetics of the D 1 stage can be expressed as dw/dt = 51.94e–3.11/T [H+]0.25[ClO 2 ]0.78 K 1.16, the power-law exponents for post-extraction kappa number, ClO2 concentration and H+ concentration were 1.16, 0.78 and 0.25, respectively. The coefficient of correlation (R 2) values were greater than 0.9, which indicated that model's prognostications are close to experimentally measured values. In the D 1 stage, chromophoric groups were removed. The AOX reaction rate was primarily governed by the amount of post-extraction lignin in the pulp and the ClO2 charge in D 1. The activation energy of the AOX reaction rate was 0.03 kJ · mol–1, which indicated that the reaction was practical.
