Organized by the Engineering Integrity Society, this was the 5th such international meeting in a series which began back in 1986. These events form a significant contribution towards the aims of the EIS, which are to provide a pragmatic and practical arena for engineers who need access to information on a multidisciplinary basis. Today's engineers must be able to handle problems that cover a variety of engineering disciplines. The Society, which is a UK-based registered charity, is particularly committed to promoting projects that support professional development and attract young people into the profession.Delegates from more than 20 countries provided over 60 contributions organized into two parallel sessions. The papers chosen for this special volume span the wide range of applications, advanced experimental techniques and structural materials that were discussed during the 3 day meeting.
