During the past fifteen years a considerable amount of the research conducted at the Centre de Gdomorphologie du CNRS, Caen, France, has focused on examining the effects of laboratory-simulated frost shattering on different rock types. The results of this work have been well documented in our Bulletins and in various French-language journals. Unfortunately, however, these findings have not been effectively disseminated through the general body of geomorphological literature. At a time when there appears to be a growing interest in periglacial processes and their effects, it may prove useful to provide a short English-language summary of some of our more significant findings. Mention of English-language references has been deliberately avoided. We are aware of most of the research which has been carried out in other countries (Lautridou, 1978; Lautridou and McGreevy, 1980), and have discussed our findings in relation to those of others in our previously published work.
