In recent linguistic and phonetic literature, features of speech sounds, their distribution and combination, and also-to some extent-pro sodies have been discussed in detail, but little has been said about paralinguistic features and the articulation basis, or-as it is more often referred to-basis of articulation. This article intends to shed some light on the somewhat nebulous term ‘articulatory basis’ which is used frequently in the phonetic and linguistic literature of Eastern Europe1, but highly neglected in contemporary Western literature. It will be shown how the term ‘articulatory basis’ or ‘basis of articu lation’originated and developed and how it is defined and applied today, especially in the field of language teaching in Western Europe and America.
