Although the mixing of solid particles is a process about which there is still much to be learnt, designers of industrial plants often fail to take advantage of the available knowledge, so that the best possible results are not achieved. This review discusses the methods of describing, specifying and testing mixtures. The operation of a mixer must be regarded as producing an equilibrium between mixing and segregation. The mechanisms of these processes are discussed and it is proposed that mixers can be classified as either segregating or non-segregating. Components to be mixed can be similarly classified, and a guide to the selection of the mixer for a particular duty is thus obtained: materials that tend to segregate should not be put into a “segregating mixer”. Finally the need for care in the handling of a mixture so as to avoid segregation is discussed.
