Chemical sensing with optical fibres is one of the most interesting of the emerging sensor technologies. Optical fibres, which act as light carriers, impart several attractive features to the chemical sensor. The optical fibre allows the transmission of optical signals through great distances with low power loss and minimum or no corruption due to ambient electrical noise or electromagnetic interference. Thus optical fibres and hence optical-fibre transducers are ideally suited for remote monitoring. The optical fibre also bestows total electrical isolation at the transducing end, thus making the device safe for use in explosive environments and inin-vivomedical applications. The small physical dimensions lend the fibre to miniaturization and allow geometric flexibility for the transducer. It is possible to carry out real-time, on-line analysis with these devices. The robust nature of the optical fibre allows the transducer to be operated in hostile environments and the relatively low cost of the fibres introduces an economic advantage to the sensing device. Like many other chemical sensors, these transducers can be multiplexed to enhance their versatility.
