What makes a plant suddenly turn from producing leaf buds and begin to form flowers in stead? There are at least two good rea sons for exploring this mysterious proc ess of nature. Firstly, the question goes to the heart of the origin of form, one of the most interesting and fundamental problems in modern biology. Secondly, if we learned how to control flowering, we could probably find radical and won derful new ways of growing crops to our desires-in short, we could revolutionize agriculture.A great deal of thought and experi ment has been devoted to the attempt to understand the flowering process, and several years ago the findings up to that time were reviewed in an article in this magazine [see" The Control of Flower ing," by Aubrey W. Naylor; SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, May, 1952}. Since then there have been some rather exciting further developments.
