IN RESPONSE: We greatly appreciate the additional valuable information on the prevalence of HHpgV-1 provided by Drs. Tang and Wang and Dr. Candotti and colleagues. The strong association between HCV and HHpgV-1 is fascinating. Like Drs. Tang and Wang, we hypothesized that there might be viral codependence, as is appreciated for hepatitis B and D virus. The clear example that we reported of sustained HHpgV-1 replication in the absence of HCV RNA proves that HCV replication is not required for HHpgV-1 but leaves open other epidemiologic, and possibly virologic, explanations. As Drs. Tang and Wang and Dr. Candotti and colleagues comment, further studies may help to illuminate the relationship between HHpgV-1 and HCV and will more generally improve our understanding of HHpgV-1 infection.
