Abstract In very shallow coastal water bodies, ice cover can significantly alter the hydrographic characteristics, that is, the topography and water depths. Not only the coastal geometry is affected, but also the widths of the openings to harbors might change. It was shown that an ice cover alters the character of tides quite significantly in Tuktoyaktuk Harbour located on the southern part of the Beaufort Sea in Arctic Canada.
