Method.A Sylvania glow-modulator tube produces flicker with an electronically controlled light-beam (FRITZE and SIMONSON, 1951). This tube provides a perfect square wave form of light-stimulus with a transition time less than 1 yo of the cycle length and is free from vibrations and noise. The frequency of light flashes p. sec. is changed by use of a motor, the velocity of which can be regulated and which is immediately stopped by an electromagnetic device, when the subject presses a button. All other conditions remain unaltered (2.0 mm artificial pupil, monocularly, equal light-dark ratio, light-adapted eye). 2 emmetropes are subjects. The results are averages of experiments repeated on three days in different order. The test-areas have a constant retinal illumination of 0.87 lux throughout and their diameters are varied between 0.5'to 400'. Each series of experiments with dark background is started after the light of the adapting screen is turned off, and lasts about 5 minutes. No effect, attributable to dark-adaptation is observed. Experiments with adjacent white surround are performed at 1 m distance for large and 7.5 m for small retinal images, and with mixed black and white backgrounds at 4.0 m. All results are directly comparable, because the FFF is independent of accommodation
