A computer-controlled system for monitoring and controlling the concentration of CO2in a suite of five experimental glasshouses is described. In each house, the CO2concentration, measured using an infra-red gas analyser, was maintained close to the ambient concentration by injecting pure CO2through a metering system controlled by the computer. The required injection rate for the interval between concentration measurements was calculated with an algorithm that used ventilation rate and previous and current CO2concentrations as inputs. Ventilation rate was calculated using a relation based on ventilator position and windspeed, determined previously from measurements using nitrous oxide as a tracer gas. Soil respiration was measured by the gain in weight of soda lime inside a container inverted over the soil. Net canopy photosynthesis was estimated as the residual after the other CO2fluxes had been accounted for. The system worked reliably and was used to obtain light-response curves of net canopy photosynthesis for a number of tropical crops.
