Recommendations for interventions with HIV-positive women who continue to engage in risky sexual behaviours include education about the importance of avoiding reinfection with HIV and exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, as well as about the role of alcohol, cocaine and other drug use in increasing the likelihood of risky sexual behaviours. Cognitive-behavioural interventions may prove effective in enhancing women's belief that adopting safer-sex practices will reduce the risk of infection (self efficacy). Systemic interventions with seropositive women and their primary sex partners may create opportunities for sexual communication and negotiation of safer sex, motivating both the women and their partners to use condoms.
