The growth in weight of single A. proteus over the life cycle was measured by means of the Cartesian diver balance. Cell growth in volume and protein, and growth in the volume of the nucleus were followed over the cell cycle employing small groups of amoebae in synchronous growth. Growth of the cell is most rapid immediately following division. The rate declines steadily through most of the interphase and virtually ceases during the period of about 4 hours before division. Nuclear growth is rapid, following division, but falls to a lower rate during most of the interphase. During the several hours prior to division, when cell growth has stopped, the nuclear volume increases rapidly.
