Four years of tissue culture work for which 3,000 explants of rabbits'' aortae were studied by conventional stains, by histochemical methods, by light-, phase-still- and cine-photomicrography led to identification of 4 distinctive cell types. Endothelial cells, fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells grow from intact aortic segments. In addition, a 4th cell, a lipid-laden macrophage, grows from aortic explants with experimental atherosclerotic plaques.
