Abstract The rate of production in ice of fast neutrons is given. It is shown that the number of fast neutrons produced at any point in the ice is approximately proportional to the number of cosmic ray stars at that point. The results are compared with those of other investigations, and it is pointed out that many previous results are too low due to the misuse of a formula given by Bethe et al. (1940).
