Expertise in assessment of quality of life is rapidly growing. Several instruments for measuring functional status and quality of life have been developed, and studies have been conducted that attest to their usefulness and psychometric robustness. 1 Most of these instruments, however, have been developed for use in a single cultural setting, and only in recent years has attention turned to the need for quality of life assessment tools that can be used across cultures. The utility of quality of life assessment tools that can be used to make cross-cultural comparisons are elaborated in the introduction to this journal issue. They include basic research, international epidemiological studies of the effects of disease on quality of life, cross-national clinical trials, and comparative cost-effectiveness research. The way in which people define quality of life appears to vary significantly across cultures (ie, how people in a given setting define a" good life"), as do the factors that affect quality of life (ie, access to and availability of health care, socioeconomic conditions, etc.). Maintaining sensitivity to this diversity while producing cross-culturally comparable data is the challenge currently facing quality of life researchers working on crosscultural quality oflife assessment instruments. This paper examines cultural aspects of the health-related quality of life construct and discusses the current approaches to cross-cultural quality of life assessment. At least four different approaches have been used to develop quality of life assessments with a cross-cultural con-
