The author gives short quotations of relevant passages from these books and adds notes that may help to throw light on the difficulty of understanding and interpreting the observation of nebulae when the knowledge of the nature and size of the universe was so limited. The search for the nebulae is based on a series of articles by the same author which appeared in the Journal of the British Astronomical Association a few years ago.
