The demands on the design of mechanical components are constantly increasing. Shell structures, which have high stiffness with respect to their weight, offer a large potential for this challenge. However, shallow areas of shell structures have a Achilles' heel: they have a very low bending stiffness. A proven and often cheap and easy remedy for this weakness are channels embossed into the structure, so called bead patterns. These beads incease the bending moment of interia of shell structures very efficiently. Even though, this is a very easy and well known principle, the determination of an ideal orientation of the bead pattern is even for relatively simple geometries and loading conditions not possible soley by intuition. This work gives an overview over the methods and rules available for bead design so far. From fundamental investigations and mechanical observations, optimality criteria and design rules for bead patterns have been derived. With these results, a method for the design of shell structures with bead patterns is developed and demonstrated on examples from both, theory and practice. Focus of the method is the easy application in practice. The applying engineer gets to know the principles of bead patterns and how to use the FE-Method to design efficient patterns, with and without additional tools.
