When the follicles of the mystacial vibrissae of newborn mice have been injured, the adult and adolescent primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is profoundly altered: the region normally occupied by the barrels that correspond to be injured follicles is a barrelless domain. Our question was: is this domain barrelless from the start, OR do barrels begin to develop, and then disappear? After placing lesions in 50 newborn animals and analyzing their barrel fields throughout early postnatal development, we found that barrels corresponding to the lesioned follicles never develop. In their stead a barrelless domain developsfrom the beggnning, along with the adjacent normal barrels that correspond to the unlesioned follicles.
