(The following text is the draft of the introductory chapter of a volume co-edited by Billy K. L. So and Ramon H. Myers, which is entitled TREATY-PORT ECONOMY IN MODERN CHINA: EMPIRICAL STUDIES OF INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE AND ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE, to be published in the spring of 2011 by the Institute of East Asian Studies, University of California at Berkeley as an item on their China Research Monograph Series. The text was authored by Billy K. L. So. During the presentation at the Conference, the four presenters will jointly present their respective findings as well as the overarching theme of the volume.
