Summary The flow of water in a narrow tidal channel has been investigated by the electromagnetic method. A determination of the voltage-water velocity relation using direct current meters, has shown that the e.m.f. is due to local induction only, and may therefore be used as an indicator of mean velocity across the section. This calibration data has been used, together with a tidal filter, to determine the non-tidal transport in the channel and its relation to tidal range and windstress. In the absence of wind, the residual flow is -800m3 s-l at mean springs, and -330 m3 s-l at neaps. The effect of windstress is marked, with a change in flow of - 190 m3 s-l for 100 m2 s-' windstress acting along the direction of the Straits. Reversal of the predominant flow to the S.W. occurs for strong S.W. winds.
